TELSCOMBE TOWN COUNCIL HISTORY

In January 1929 Telscombe Parish Council was formed, prior to which  it existed as a Parish meeting. In 1974 with changes in Local Government, the Council became a Town Council with a Mayor. Telscombe Town covers Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean. The first Mayor of Telscombe was Mrs Molly Pratten who served on the Town Council for 25 years.

At that time a silver and enamel brooch was commissioned by Councillors which was designed by a student at Brighton Polytechnic as part of a degree course. The brooch was presented to Mrs Pratten and its design has since become the Council's logo. The small green symbol in the Centre represents Telscombe Tye with the red bricks on one of the 'T' symbols representing houses and the blue in the other 'T' representing the sea.

In April 1997 the Town Council bought a plot of land on the South Coast Road, Telscombe Cliffs for the purpose of building a Civic Centre, the ground floor offices of which which were finally ready for occupation in February 2000. A few months later builders moved in to finish the first floor of the building. In 2001, once all works were complete, rooms were available for hire. The Civic Centre is staffed by the Town Clerk (full-time), Deputy Town Clerk (full-time), Clerical Officer (mornings), and two part-time Caretakers.

The Town Council has thirteen members who are elected at four yearly intervals. The Council meets on alternate months throughout the year, January, March, May, July, September and November. There are three Committees:- Amenities & Civic Centre, Planning & Highways, and Policy & Resources. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are members of each Committee.

There are several regular events held in the Civic Centre:-  Yoga every Monday and Thursday evenings,  Pilates every Wednesday evening and the Citizens Advice Bureau during the day every Tuesday.  The Telscombe Residents Association, Peacehaven & Telscombe Womens Institute and the Breast Cancer Group meet on a monthly basis. Several local businesses hire rooms for meetings and events. It is also a popular venue for birthday and anniversary parties, as well as wedding receptions.  In addition the Adult Education Authority runs various courses in the Civic Centre. During the summer the Saltdean Language School hires rooms in the Civic Centre to teach foreign students from France and Spain.  Rooms are available for hire for all types of functions - please see details under relevant sections of the website, or contact the offices on 01273 589777.
